This work is intended to give readers an appreciation for the role law plays in the everyday operation of the healthcare system. While retaining the same basic format as previous editions, this fifth edition discusses new developments in the areas of HIPAA, abortion, and the withholding of life-sustaining treatment. Chapters have been reordered for better flow, and the chapter on corporate compliance programs now offers greater emphasis on fraud and abuse issues. Also new are chapter objectives, summaries, and discussion questions, plus real-life cases, boxes on legal scenarios, and a glossary. The appendix of the fourth edition has been abandoned in favor of excerpts from judicial decisions. Showalter has been a law professor and a director of compliance for a hospital system.
