American Beauty is published to coincide with the exhibition that opens in Dublin in 2002, and then travels to The Netherlands, France, and the United States. The author focuses on key works from one of the United States' most respected museum collections of American art from the eighteenth to the twentieth century - the Detroit Institute of Arts. The first acquisitions were made almost immediately after the Institute was founded in 1883. By 1927 the collection of American artworks had grown to such an extent that it had to be installed in its own wing of the museum.
