Description

African-American photographer Addison Scurlock (1883-1964) founded his Washington, D.C. studio in 1911, a studio which under his and later his sons' hands would operate until 1994, documenting African American society of the nation's capital through documentary and portrait photography, the latter being the elder Scurlock's specialty. This volume collects examples of the work produced by the Scurlock Studio, much of which focuses on the elites and luminaries of Black Washington, portrayed in formal portraits and photographs of events such as weddings and balls, but also includes many looks into the social lives of the African American middle classes and a small handful portraying the lives of the working class and poor. A large number of photographs focus on Howard University, its faculty, and its students. Among the more famous figures appearing in the photographs are Duke Ellington, Ralph Bunche, Martin Luther King, E. Franklin Frazier, Carter G. Woodson, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Sidney Poitier. Also included are historical essays on Black Washington and the Scurlock Studio. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Read More
