The Cambridge Guide to Fiction in English is an alphabetized reference work that should prove an invaluable resource to anyone with an interest in the novel. Writers and major works from the US and UK are represented, as are those from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, India, and the Caribbean. In addition to literary writing, coverage is given to such genres as Gothic, detective and science fiction. Attention is also given to literary trends such as realism and naturalism. With over 2100 entries, the writers range from Jane Austen and Charles Dickens to Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Charles Brockden Brown, Richard Wright and Willa Cather. All major modern writers are represented: from Don De Lillo to Carol Shields and Jane Smiley, Armistad Maupin to E. Annie Proulx; Spanish-American writers such as Gloria Anzaldua and Oscar Hijuelos; Qu^D'ebecois writers including Roch Carrier. The major Aborigine and Maori writers are included, as are Doris Lessing, Michael Ondaatje, and R. K. Narayan. And of course many, many others. An extensive introduction offers a masterful and original discussion of the historical development and current form of the novel. A selective bibliography indicates areas for further reading, and an appendix lists recipients of all major literary prizes. Ian Ousby is a free-lance writer. His books include The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English (Cambridge, 1993) The Blue Guide to Burgundy and The Blue Guide to Literary Britain and Ireland.
